Description

Navy Strength Gin has ancient origins. Long before it was possible to measure the alcohol by volume of a drink, the Royal Navy was faced with this problem: ensuring that gunpowder would remain flammable even if a cask of gin broke in transit. In fact, in the days of cannonballs and muskets, wet gunpowder represented a death sentence in battle. The “Navy strength” label indicated the safe spirit to be transported on Navy ships and was affixed only to the barrels that passed the empirical test: after dipping a few grains of gunpowder in the gin, they were tried to set them on fire. The Navy measurement continued until 1890 and still today indicates a distillate with an alcohol content greater than 57.15%.

Alcohol content: 57.7% vol.
